  1. Hello,

I am using Pinnacle Studio PCTV to capture. If I capture both audio and video (in Virtualdub on my W98, 800 Mhz ) at 480 x 576 to make vcd, I am dropping frames, but if I capture only Video, I drop 0 frames.

Therefore, is there a way that I can capture audio and vidoe seperately. Does it mean that I capture in two steps. Is it not possible to use Virtualdub to capture video and some another programme running at the same time to capture audio and then use both the files in tmpg to convert to .mpg2 (for svcd)

    Thanks,
    Rohit

  2. Sorry, I forgot to mention that I am using Huffy for compression and 24 bit input Image and it is here that I am dropping frames, of course if sound capture is also activated.

But with sound capture ON and if I use picvideo mjpeg compression, I do not drop frames. Therefore, what is better. I have read in these forums that picvideo is lossless whereas huffy is not , therefore, I would like to use huffy. Also, huffy is free, whereas I have to pay for picvideo.

Any suggestions, if I should capture audio video seperately but with huffy, or should I use picvideo instead.

Thanks a great for your help.

    Regards,
    Roh

To capture audio and video seperately is NOT done in VDub (vdub puts them 'usualy' -> I would think 'always', together).
You must check your video-codec drivers for the cap-card, most likely you must use a different program to capture that will do them seperately.

You have it the wrong way around huffy is lossless not picvideo if you truly want lossless capture full frames(uncompressed)thats free also although files will be huge i get about an hour at 480x360 on a 60 gig drive but it looks so much better than any compression codec

Plus it should be easier on our system

  5. The reason you're dropping frames with audio capture is because the capture software is trying to keep the audio and video in sync. You might have the option of unlocking the audio and video streams, but then the audio will be out of sync with the video. It all depends on the quality of your audio capture card. If the frequency of your audio card was dead on (44.100000000Khz) you would not drop any video frames (or repeat any frames). My audio card needs about 30 frames to be dropped to stay in sync with the video per hour. This is a normal value. If I turn off the audio/video lock, the audio is 1 second off at the end of a 1 hour capture. You will never notice that 30 frames are missing or repeated per 1 hour! There are 108000 frames per hour! +/- 30 frames will make no difference, but will keep the audio in sync with the video.

If you are dropping a lot more frames, then you have a PC with a bottleneck someplace...
