Resolve supports DV in a QuickTime file. Easy enough to re-wrap from AVI if one really wants to use Resolve.
    Thanks JVRaines.
Resolve looks too sophisticated for me.

Any experience with Corel VideoStudio, Hitfilm Express, or Shotcut?
    Do they work for DVavi?
Shotcut: Why not just download and install it, and try. It's free. I have not tried with DVavi, but as Shotcut is FFMpeg based I would assume that it can handle it.

Yes, I will try to get a feel of the interface.
Maybe I should be more clear, I was wondering which one(s) of those that can export without re-encoding.

It's because I don't know how to tell whether an NLE re-encores or not.

  3. There's no point in using an NLE unless you plan on doing some filtering. If you do some filtering, then an export from that NLE requires a reencode. There are some programs that only reencode the parts you're filtering, but I doubt any of the ones you're considering will do that.

  4. I think, there is a point to use NLE, because he can humanly , comfortably edit his home footage. Comfortably cut parts out , just edit the footage. And getting DVavi again. That is back up and then he can proceed with filtering(if he wants to), encoding to MP4 whatever.

In case you try those Vegas versions, while exporting DVavi using DVavi export template, it previews black screen that shows text "no recompression required", and basically copies the same frames to disk. only spots with cross-fades etc, when it needs to render new frames it just creates those frames and after that section it proceeds back to copying frames again and so fort ...

  5. Thank you all for your replies.

All I need is very simple:
    1. Join and cut DVavi and export it to the same DVavi format without re-encoding.
    2. Convert to MP4 (H.264/AAC).

I don't plan to do filtering.

I will take a look at the NLE recommendations. Thank you all for everything.

  6. Just want to give an update.

    - DaVinci Resolve - cannot read my DVavi file.
    - Corel VideoStudio X10 - interface is "too simple" and giving me impression not much customization can be done (I might be wrong). Seems to be longer than Vegas, thus I am not sure whether it did re-encoding or not.
    - Hotfilm Express - won't even run on my Windows 8.1 (64-bit), Intel i5 3.1 GHz, 10GB RAM, Intel HD 4600.
    - Shotcut - takes so long, I'm pretty sure it re-encodes.
    - Vegas Movie Studio - super fast and shows clearly "no recompression required" to indicate no re-encoding.

Thanks to Al, I will go with Vegas Movie Studio.
(Perhaps I will get the older version 14. But 15 has faster render speed).
