Hello,
I'm planning on capturing a video recorded on a Sony PAL camera. This camera supports Hi8 XR.
Now, after reading up a bit I know I should be capturing a video from a Hi8 tape at 768x576. Is it higher for Hi8 XR, or the same?

If you were to check on the XR spec you would see that it just provides for a modest 10% improvement in luminance.
Maximum PAL resolution remains at 768*576 but few capture devices support that. So even if the camera recorded at that (which I also doubt) you capture at 720*576 or 702*576.
Both of the these will ultimately display at 768*576 for 4:3 DAR
