I hear noise in both, just that the 384 version pulses. Why even include audio if it's just line noise? Anyway I don't know what the problem is, try it with Nero AAC or QAAC.

  3. Yes that's it. It distorts the tape hiss into pulses.I chose a section that is just tape hiss, imagine if there is dialogue. Just curious why it does that. I'll just encode 320kbps or lower.

  4. Did you try HandBrake nightly? It's based on ffmpeg, not libav like 1.1.2. The AAC encoder in ffmpeg was supposed to be superior and the changes hadn't been merged into libav. Not sure if that still is true. Devs aren't gonna care about a branch that will soon be deprecated.

(There is a guide for building HandBrake with the better FDK-AAC but I guess it's not for the current nightly branch.)

  5. No I haven't tried nightly builds. I usually avoid betas. It's OK I'll just wait for the next stable release. I'll encode under 320kbps for now.

    - Improved quality of the default AAC encoder on non-Mac platforms (FFmpeg AAC), no longer experimental
