  1. Firstly, sorry if this has been posted before, I have been doing hours of researching on this and i am at my wits end. I downloaded an avi file online and tried to play it on my windows media player. There is no video, and the audio is scratchy. I'm not sure if i need to convert, but i did download TEMPEn. and tried to, but it didn't accpet the file. So I did everything the faq told me to, and downloaded every codec imanginable. I also tried using avi2vcd to convert, it told me to decompress my audio, so I did, but my audio is not 8 or 16 bit. whew! Okay, first question is how, and do I need to change my audio to 8 or 16 bit? And do I just have a bad seed of an avi file, or is it just conversion problems?
I am extremely sorry for being so wordy, and much thanks in advance for any help thrown my way!!

  2. You say you can't play on windows media player if you don't have version seven try that or another player! I would think this should be your first course of action, if you can't play it its probably a bad file I alway play at least a few minutes of any video to see if I even want to convert.Look under tools for other players
We were all NEWBIES once and the only stupid question is the one that's not asked?

  3. it would have been helpfull if you stated what codecs you installed instead of just saying you installed every imaginable codec.

    do you have SMR installed?

    do you have OGG installed?

do you have DivX 5 installed?

do you have DivX 3.11 installed?

in the file properties (right click the file) what does it say for video decompressor?

if the audio is playing then it is a complete file.
    peace out,
    dumwaldo
