  1. Hi,

Though I am a newbie to capturing and compressing
I suspect my question is more complex than it sounds.

I bought a cheap (Pixelview) Tuner card, downloaded
picvideo, huffyuv and divx codecs. Installed
    virtualdub.

The first time I did this VirtualDub recognised codecs
in the compression window... no prob

I had to do some work on my system and re-installed
everything - now suddenly Virtual Dub cannot
recognise any codecs other than the standard Indeo, Cinepak
etc defaults. (All codecs I installed are visible in control panel
and seem to be OK in registry)

1: What is the best order to install codecs/VD?

2: What version of VD is best?

3: Have I just missed something small?

    Many thanks for any help

    Niall

  2. Hi there.
try this simple thing. In vdub go into capture mode and click video tab and select 'custom format'. There you will find (on the left) all the different resolutions available, but on the right you will see a box with all the different video data formats allowed by your capture card/driver.

I had your problem after a reinstall and found a weird data setting highlighted, and this was only supported by a few codecs as seen on the left. Just select rgb 24 or better still YUY2.

    Hope this helps

  3. Thanks droolian01,

When I check the supported formats
it only lets me use a couple (of very simple
ones and not the ones I want... ie yuy2 or
    mjpeg).

I think this has something to do with the fact that somehow
the capture 'device' has defaulted to Microsoft WDM Image
    Capture (win32) -
Though my card is is supposed to use a Bt WDM
driver (which is present in control panel, multimedia
devices) ... How can I get VD to use this one (which I
suspect gives me much more options re-compression.
    Thanks ...

    Niall
