Depends what you want to capture. Off of a satellite feed, from a video site or from a camera or other device?

Add some more information and someone here may give you advice.

And I also changed your thread title to better reflect your topic.

    And welcome to our forums.

Depends on what you want to capture, VHS,Betamax, miniDV, video8, Hi8, Digital8, or video from a games console.
Depending on which capture device you use, the video signal must be clean & stable, use a good computer, not an old "weak" one, this also depends on your capture device,
a lot of capture devices are "old" and are not suported by the operating system of a normal pc, the interface what the capture device uses, must be also present on the computer,
there are some video output connections, composite video, s-video component-video, HDMI.
composite is the one that is most used, but not the best, s-video is a little better, component video is the best analog video connection, HDMI is also preseent on some of the last vcr's that where available, A vhs/dvd combo machine would be ideal for transfering vhs tapes to dvd, and is also usable as "passthrough" to a capture device, A dvr, Digital Video Recorder can also be used as a passthrough, a dvr can be one that records on dvd (optical discs) or it's one that has a harddrive to store the video on, most of the time you can also edit what you recorded.
Capture devices can be: a USB "dongle" USB goes in the computer, the cable goes into the vcr/dvd combo or dvr, a usb dongle is cheap but does not perform all too well, a capture device can also be a "box" withe a certain interface, there are some of those....
A capture device can be also a PCI card that sits in a computer.
It all depends what you can afford or can get hold of, some old digital camcorders can also serve as passthrough.
If you have only few tapes, you could search for a local photo-shop that does transfer work.

btw "capture" here, relates to video, not a person
