I just posted this at AndroidCentral but thought I would try here as well.

I need to recover multiple text conversations from up to 3-4 months ago.
There was never any back up.
I figured this would be a straight forward easy thing to do.
I downloaded a couple PC programs like Dr.fone.
The program said it had to temporarily root the phone.
But upon trying it failed... so did the other program that I cannot remember the name of.
They both told me I needed to root it myself.

So... is there a way to recover these without root?

If not can someone throw some 'rooting' advice at me. I know I can search for it but there is more unreliable info out there than valid on the subject.

My phone details are as follows.
    Samsung S7 Edge
    SMG935A
    Version 8.0.0
    AT&T

    Thanks for any help.

I'm guessing you have already seen this page: https://www.restore-iphone-data.com/samsung-sms-recovery.html

But my guess is that the data was on the internal memory of the phone and not on
the added Micro SD card and it may have been overwritten and destroyed.

'3-4 months ago'. I doubt the data is still there. But maybe.

Other members may be able to give you more help.

Yep, I've tried that. Like I said it tries a temporary root on the phone which fails.

Yes, internal storage... yeah I know chances are good its been over written, unfortunately.

Someone said this at Android Central
"The SMS messages are stored in a SQL database located in a hidden folder.
As such, there is no such thing as either undelete or recover. Sorry."

If that is true then there is certainly a lot of false advertising and BS YouTube videos out there...

That is simply for transferring data. Nothing to do with recovering deleted data. I'm actually going to try and root tonight using this YT video as a guide
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JwLja68KmKM&t=4s

If it works then I will try the recover again with Drfone. Their tech support that it is capable of recovering data stored in an SQL database.
