    Hi Everyone,

I wonder if you can help me. I have an MKV file, which when played on my TV is showing many small lines across the video. It seems that the video needs to be deinterlaced.

Can anybody recommend some good free software that can do this job in a fast effective way? Encoding the video with Handbrake might be an option, but it will take a long time.

    Thanks in advance.

Best if you can provide a 10 - 20 second sample showing the problem

Thanks. Have just found out that the video is a simple remultiplex and no audio or video transcoding has been performed. Assume this is the problem.

What would you suggest I do ?

    Thanks.

davexnet already made a good suggestion:

Then you might get more informed advice for what to do. Or, you could just deinterlace it to see if that works.

Do you know the best software to deinterlace the video?

No, because the best software will be invented next year, or the year after...

But recoding, similar to Handbrake, would be necessary. No conversion including really good deinterlacing would be faster than a conversion without any.

And if you are really unlucky, then your video has been scaled vertically already, means, the "small lines" you see are already a sign for irreparable destruction. Thus, to be certain about it, we would have to inspect it.

Many thanks, I'll give Handbrake a go.

  8. QTGMC() in AviSynth is the best for most sources. But AviSynth has a steep learning curve (it's a script based filtering system). And deinterlacing may not be appropriate for your source. Without a sample nobody can say for sure.
