Hi,
I needed to hardcode custom subs into a video. The trick is however they must have a black textbox in the background; MovieMaker can't do that. I downloaded Aegisubs, which does have the function and made the subs. Next, I used MKVToolNix to merge the subs with the video. It worked: I have a mkv file consisting of the video and the subs. When I'm uploading the video to YouTube, the subs disappear.
This is the 2nd day I'm struggling with this. Help!
Try StreamFab Downloader and download from Netflix, Amazon, Youtube! Or Try DVDFab and copy Blu-rays!

MKVtoolnix does not hardcode subs, it simply adds soft subs to Matroska files.
Use a program that can do what you want, such as Handbrake, Hybrid, MeGUI, etc. -
Not for YouTube they don't. Is that some sort of requirement of your own?
Next, I used MKVToolNix to merge the subs with the video.
Use one of the several possible solutions suggested. And there are others -
ASS is not supported by youtube..
You have to burn it in the video before uploading it
