Incredibly sorry for necroing (and you probably won't see this anyway) but I'd just like to say, that in my case, the AVI files were too corrupted to be opened by Avidemux. So, I couldn't use your method of 'open + copy + save in Avidemux', because Avidemux literally couldn't even open any of the files.
