Can anyone help me? I am trying to rip my copy of Das Boot to my computer. Even though I can rip it, the close captions do not keep. For examble: At the start of the movie it shows a text about U-Boats. The thing is it is in German. When I play the movie on my player an english translation of this comes up automatically. Any info or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Use MakeMKV to rip the disc - the resulting mkv file will be the same size as the DVD. Inspecting the resultant mkv file you should find all the subtitles available on the original disc. If you want to ditch any non english subs just run the mkv file through MKVToolnix and untick anything you don't want.

I do use MakeMKV and MKVToolnix. I just want to have the english that explains the german print of the U-Boats in WWII.

As they are not burnt into the video then they must be part of one of the subtitle tracks - if this is indeed the case then extract them from the MKV file using MKVCleaver. They will probably be IDX/Sub so you will then need to use Subtitle Edit to OCR them to SRT text format. You could then mux the SRT file back into the MKV or keep it separate, same name as the video file. Just did a simple search with Google and found this srt of the whole film. This part is what you are looking for?
Code:1 00:00:39,000 --> 00:00:42,000 La Rochelle, France. Autumn, 1941. 2 00:00:42,200 --> 00:00:51,400 The German U-boat fleet is suffering its first major setbacks. British freighters are sailing with stronger Destroyer escorts. 3 00:00:51,600 --> 00:00:58,500 But Germany is constantly sending new U-boats into battle. Keeping the Allies in check in the Atlantic. 4 00:00:59,000 --> 00:01:10,000 Of 40,000 German sailors, 30,000 never return.

Netmask56, the subtitles started up after the German opening screens where over. Is this normal? Also the file states "Director's cut", the version I have is the "The Original Uncut Version."

Well I suggest you do a search on Google for English Subtitles Das Boot and or The Boat and there are dozens of entries. Even if you find the correct version you may still have to adjust the timings with one of the various subtitle editing programs like Subtitle Edit or Subtitle workshop etc. The problem for you is to find the correct version otherwise going back to your original DVD and extracting the DVD subs and then doing a OCR rendition of the DVD graphic style subtitles to text (SRT).

What software player are you using on your computer? Sometimes you have to set whether the subs appear automatically or not and what language is the default. If there are multiple subs, it may be defaulting to one that's not really there. I see this sometimes even if I uncheck all the non-English subs in MakeMKV.
