Would you double the FPS for interlaced footage

Hi group

I am converting quite a few old tapes of various formats. The delivery method is MP4 on a thumb drive so they can play on a smart TV.

I know its frowned upon by some to throw away fields, so i wondered if it was accepted to double the frame rate. Are smart TVs able to play 50fps at 576p? I don't believe youtube does this spec and i think it would need to be scaled to 720p at a minimum but i dont really want to scale video (if i can help it) as it can highlight quality issues.

Any advice in this area is greatly appreciated.

On every frame of truly interlaced content there are two fields from two different moments in time. So turning the 1 frame (2 fields) into two separate frames is recommended for modern viewing, using something like Yadif or QTGMC (which is slower but better quality). Not everything on VHS was interlaced though so you have to watch out for that, like content that originally sourced on FILM. As Australia is a former PAL country, FILM content was usually simply sped up from 24fps to 25fps and so requires no further processing (especially not deinterlacing).

Interlaced content usually only came off of an analog video camera in a studio or a portable video camera. Everything else was usually progressive in PAL countries. You could also simply leave the interlacing in place and just have your media player deinterlace it on the fly, but for uploading to something like Youtube or media players with bad deinterlacing it would need to be processed to clean progressive frames.

I have attempted to strip the fields and double the frame rate and I really like the smoothness of the video on my monitor. But as i don't have a TV with USB, i cant test if it works on a smart TV at 50fps. I just want to avoid any issues if i offer this a paid service and customers cant view it on a TV.

All the contents on the tapes are home videos.

Generally not recommended to upscale unless you are trying to force VP9 with Youtube. As far as 50fps on a TV with 576p content, just about any TV should be able to play that but every TV is different so I would assume nothing. I know my Sony TV from 2013 can only play any resolution (1080p/720p/480i) MPEG2 in either a .TS or .MPG container, H.264 or anything better does not work.
