I'm using the latest Firefox ESR (a development track that lags some ways behind -- because I don't like changes that are underway with the browser, which are soon to ruin it !); it seems to be regularly hanging when I try to navigate forum threads here. This is intermittent, but makes site access rather problematic when it is happening. Going backwards or forwards in threads, or trying to post can just become untenable. I have tried disabling any extensions that could be at fault. This has not helped, so far. What I'm finding is that if I reach the site via the Opera browser, everything still works as it should. (I should also try this with Chrome, which I have installed on other computers.) Has anyone else been seeing results like this ?

It must be something on your end. I use FF ESR (most recent build, 32bit, on Win10) all the time on some of my PCs, with never an issue (of this site, nor most others).

    Which platform? Which app bitdepth?

Btw, not sure you realize this, but ALL major browsers are tightening up their plugin architecture for security and performance reasons.

    On this particular computer (I rotate between a few), W7U SP1 x64.

I've heard the stated excuses for plugins retrenchment. At the same time, several very good extensions are apparently going away, because of it. If you look over the development related blogs for things like the outstanding DownThemAll extension, the devs are saying -- with some bitterness -- that the new APIs suck and are truly feeble in comparison with the functionality of the ones they are replacing. I'm no coder, but some of these guys have earned a major credibility, as best I can determine.

I've updated (ESR) versions twice since my last post in April. Across that background, this problem appears to be intermittent. At this session right now it is not manifesting. But it is still more likely to be something extension-related. I suppose the test for that would be for when this is happening next to do the FF invocation with extensions temporarily suppressed. The way to do that I don't happen to recall, so I'll have to look it up.
