I have the 1512 model working with Ubuntu. When I try to load the video in Avidemux, it's not working correctly. Trying to seek to different parts of the video it doesn't go to next I frame, it just jumps 10 - 25 seconds and won't go further. I used the 1512 with Windows and had no problems using Avidemux with the videos.

I used mkvtoolnix to put the ts into an MKV file and looked at it in Avidemux. One thing you can see, the key frame interval is very high, over a minute in one section. Is this directly out of a device or did you encode this file?

If you want to make it more seek friendly, you'll have to re-encode the video.
You can use Vidcoder for this, also, it can passthrough the audio as-is so only the video is re-encoded

Either mp4/AVS (H.264) or mp4/HEVC both default settings in this program is a good place to start

No need to re-encode anything, it's Avidemux that can't decode the file properly. In this sample 1512 is using open-gop and non-IDR I frames which avidemux is recognizing as P frames. It only recognizes some of them as seek-able. Plus it sometimes crashes with this file.

The thing I don't understand is how can 1512 create open-gop recordings on Linux while on Windows I never had files like that using same device?

Oops, good spot. I don't think I've seen a file like that before. I guess the OP will have to use another editor.

He can try VidCutter but I'm not sure if that program is mature enough. Other than that if he only needs to trim beginning and end from his recordings, he can use mkvtoolnixGUI for splitting. In that sample HD-PVR 2 was closing GOPs and placed I frames when there's scene change so that's the safe place to cut. I did a test and it's ok, no glitches.

I am having the same issue, and seems many others are too. I have a Hauppauge HD-PVR2 157320. Works great with working captures using Windows. Can jump between keyframes and cut out commercials no problem in avidemux. I want to get it working in Linux so I can finally dump Windows.

Using the Linux driver from Hauppauge, I get files that I can not move between keyframes, therefor can't cut out commercials.
Using an improved driver, I was able to get better quality recordings with more control over the output, but still could not seek between keyframes.

I basically found out that out of the four frame encoding options (Frame/Field/MBAFF/PAFF), switching to MBAFF is the only way I can get a file that works in Avidemux (or almost any other editing program) that I can jump between keyframes, and cut out commercials. But the captured video is jerky, looks like stop motion for very brief intervals.

Short of re-encoding the video (which I would rather not do) has anyone figured out a way to get the captures in Linux to work in Avidemux or other editing programs?
