Hi guys. Does anyone know is there any metadata left after conversion gif to any other video format, such as mp4, WebM, MOV, so you can determine that it was gif before? Thanks

  2. You can stripe metadata from gif itself, it should be no metadata related to gif source, if you not convinced you can always perform two step conversion (from gif to for example 24 bit bmp and later from 24 bit bmp to video). Due limit of 256 colons video file will be relatively easy to identify as CLUT source.

Hi Pandy, thank you for the response. The main problem, that I need to identify somehow that the mp4, which was sent to me, was a gif before. Could you describe please in more details this process "Due limit of 256 colons video file will be relatively easy to identify as CLUT source ". Thanks!

You should export few pictures from video file (try to use uncompressed or losslessly compressed picture file formats like bmp or png) then check how many colours is those pictures. If pictures are made from natural images or decent CG then they should have more than 100k colours - if number of colours will be significantly lower then it may lead to conclusion that source was 256 colours CLUT - you should also evaluate overall video quality - look at gradients, search for posterization, false colour, large amount of dither.

bit explanation from me - i had impression that you trying to create video from gif with possibility to hide any unwanted metadata that may lead to conclusion that source was CLUT based.
