  1. Can anyone help me with ripping a DVD that has DTS audio to a DVD-R. I am using Smart Ripper to rip the DVD to my hard drive. I then use DVD2AVI to create the D2V and WAV output files. Then I create my MPEG with TMPGENC. After running DVD2AVI I have no WAV file created. As I understnd it DVD2AVI does not support DTS decoding, is this ture. Is there a plug in or another way to go about this?

  3. Yea, I have an idea....

Dont use a crappy computer to make DVDs or VCDs. Get a stand alone DVD or VCD recorder.

I have the Terapin VCD recorder and the Mpeg1 quality is almost as good as DVD quality. You can not tell a difference, I have recorded all of my X-Files DVD Season sets 1-5 and Stargate Season 1 from DVD to VCD and a Stand alone VCD recorder or DVD recorder is the best way to do it!

The only thing about DVD-Rs is that YOU CAN NOT play them on MOST DVD players :)

That sucks doesnt it. Did you know that? Just because its DVD disc you are making doesnt mean its going to play in a Regular HOME DVD Player.

Most DVD players DO NOT READ DVD-R or DVD-RWs. They are just started making DVD players that Read MP3 and CDRs. I wouldnt waste my time on DVD-Rs when you CAN NOT play them on anything.

Mpeg1 DVD quality on a Stand Alone VCD recorder is perfect and its pointless to try and do anything else or waste your money on hardware or software when the DVD recording industry is changing every day.

When they finally start to make DVD players that Read DVD-Rs, Ill buy a Stand alone DVD Recorder and tranfer everything from my VCD to DVD but until the technology comes around, dont waste your time and money.

  4. While it's true that some older DVD players cannot play DVD-R, ( it's even worse for DVD+RW ), most of the players will play them if they are properly authored. All 3 of mine play both DVD-R and DVD-RW. Considering he's going for quality, VCD is not going to cut it compared to a DVD to DVD-R rip.

  5. VCD-Trading is just a little biased though, as well as behind the times with info.

A computer has much better capabilities to make VCDs/SVCDs, though that is not to say the Terapin can't. But a high end system would beat the Terapin on most things (I have read reviews and info about the recorder). But yes, for some stuff, the Recorder could do very well.

And actually, DVD standalones have been able to read MP3/CDR/CDRW for a while. True there are a few that still can't (it was even more rare the last few years), but now it's available with almost every major, good brand. It's not as though they just started.

Also, the compatibility for +RW is almost the same as a -R/W from what I've seen in charts/comparisons. Basically it comes down to what type of standalone you own, then you get the format that best suits your needs. and -R is actually very compatible, and CAN play on most DVD standalones. Did you know that?

As for the VCD not so good looking arguement, that's bull. SVCDs use MPEG-2 (basically the same as MPEG-1) but at a higher bitrate. The higher bitrate improves quality in the picture (despite resolution) plus it's VBR so it can allocate bits where needed and reduce them where they aren't.

Getting back to the original question...
There are currently no free ware programs to work with DTS. The only thing i know of for DTS is BeSure/Sweet, but that's to be used for making DTS Audio CDs from AC3 tracks. Though it might be able to handle DTS (as it should), there is no way to extract DTS from the VOBs from the DVD, no ripping progz support that.
