    Capture Device: Honestech Vid Box
    Software: VirutalDub
    VCR: JVC HR S-7600U

I am trying to convert a VHS tape to digital and I keep getting this scratchy distortion in my audio. How do I correct this issue and get clear sound again?

Do other tapes capture normally? Do you hear this distortion iif you play the tape back through the TV using same VCR/cable?

I have not tried hooking the VCR up to a TV set, but this isn't the only tape I'm having trouble capturing. Every tape I have put into the VCR outputs with this problem, and that's even trying different cables.

If you haven't done that, then you are unable to eliminate the VCR as the source of the problem. It's only logic.

Sounds like scrape flutter, if linear audio. I have heard a similar distortion with DAT tape, so if this is the Hi-Fi track could be a tension problem.

This is the Hi-Fi track, however I've also experienced this issue with the VCR audio set to Normal.

You could start by cleaning all the guides inside the VCR. Try adjusting the fine tracking control while playing back. The actual tension adjustment of the tape around the video drum requires special tools and expertise.

I have done both of those things you've suggested. Yesterday, when the issue first presented itself, I took the unit apart and cleaned the guide paths and audio head with MG Chemicals' Audio Video Head Cleaner and a Read Right Tape Head Cleaning Swab. The cleaning resulted in very little debris on the swab. Later, when doing playback, I did fiddle with the tracking control but this also made no change. I've considered that my capture device may be at fault. Would that be a possibility?

The only way to know is to try another converter.
