  1. Hi, folks. A few days ago I burnt a VCD consisting of a slideshow made with Ulead's Pictureshow and later my computer crashed and I lost all the pictures I had in the hard drive. However, they're in the VCD and I'd like to know if there's any program to get them back as still pictures, which is how I burnt them. When I explore the VCD I only see .dat files, but no still pictures. I guess there must be a way. Thank you.

  2. Convert the DAT to MPG (look left - how to - convert) and grab frames from that (there's probably other ways, but that's one option).
As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war."

  3. You might also keep in mind for the next time that there is an option in PictureShow for putting a copy of the pictures on the same CD. (I recently put over 1100 pictures on as a picture show, but have access to all the pictures as well. PictureShow saved them on the CD in their own directory since I checked the option.)

  4. Hey, thank you. One thing, though. I converted the DAT to MPG but I don't know how to grab frames from there, as you say. Is there any program to grab frames from a MPG file? Again, thank you.

  5. There may be other options, but this is one:

Load the mpg in virtual dub. Use the slider to find the frame you want. Video...copy source frame to clipboard. Paste into an image editor (i.e. Paint Shop Pro or whatever you have) and save. Repeat until you are done. Hopefully, someone will have a more time-efficient method to suggest.

p.s. Back up all your "irreplaceable" files every now and then - so this never happens again. Burn them to CD-RW(s) or a network hard drive (definitely faster). The small amount time it takes will be well worth it if you lose a hard drive!

Apple's QuickTime works for Frame grabbing. Just pause the movie at the right place (you can use the arrows to step a frame at a time) and press Ctrl + C. Then use Ctrl + V to insert in Word, paintbrush, photoshop or whatever.
