  1. I have some movies that are in avi format. I was wondering if it is possible to increase the quality of the movie either through a conversion or software.

  3. Well, the standard answer is "no", but that isn't actually always the case.

For example, say that a movie has a lot of noise. Running the file through a noise filter actually increases quality, from a visual standpoint. Quality, which is subjective, CAN be improved.

However, what cannot be improved is visual data. For example, there would be no way to increase resolution and get better detail.

But many filters can be used to actually increase quality.

Note, however, that you do risk reducing visual information every time you do so. So, even though visual quality may appear improved, in the end, the filters have removed information.

  4. I agree totally. It is possible.. but the cases are very rare. I have captured old cartoons now and using filters made it look better than what it was captured from (restored color quality and such). But I guess in reality this is just touch-up. But it is an example where you can say yes.

But Crap in = crap out I'd think stands true for anything with more visual data.
