  1. Ok I got some old CDs with VCD 1.1 on them.
The problem with these is you can only play them in DVD players
and you can't open the .dat files alone using windows media player
like you can with VCD 2.0

So I wanted to burn these VCD 1.1 to 2.0 but I have failed using vcdgear and other utilities. Maybe I am missing something.

    Has anyone done this before?

I have the physical cd's themselves with the .dat
or I have Nero's .nrg files.

I've tried vcdgear 3.0 and converting the .dat to .mpg or the .nrg to .mpg and none would play in WMP....

    Suggestions greatly appreciated!

  3. first of all, don't double post like that...
    1. Extract the DAT file on your 1.1 VCD to your harddrive.
    2. Open VCDgear 2.0 (or higher) and choose the DAT->MPG option.
    3. Burn the MPG file with Nero as a VCD 2.0

  4. eze,

I tried copying the .dat then opening vcdgear 3.0 to do .dat to .mpg
and then it made an .mpg
but when I opened the .mpg in WMP it won't run!

sorry for the double post, I wasn't sure if this was newbie material or not, b/c I had tried doing the "newbie method" as stated above.

  5. Maybe the problem is with your Windows Media Player? Mine can play VCD 1.1s forwards and backwards...I suggest redownloading your Windows Media Player or maybe trying another program such as PowerDVD or another found in the Tools section of this site. If not for anything else, try one of these programs as a diagnostic.

  6. Actually I never was able to copy it from MY VCD to my Hard drive. I had only ever tried to do it directly from the VCD.
But if i try to copy it says "Cannoy copy AVSEQ01: Invalid MS-DOS Function"

This VCD plays fine (as do the other 9 I want to convert), but for some reason (i use XP, tho this shouldnt matter) it won't copy, whether i do a copy from dos or in windows.

It's as if a VCD 1.1 has some unrecgonizable or unreadable area.

As for my WMP, I use 6.4 which works fine, no bloatware like in v7 or higher.

So confused as to why I wouldn't even be able to copy it, it's not corrupt or anything, I tried from two different ones which are both from the same .nrg file.

  8. Try to fix it by multiplex it with VCD Settings with TMPGEnc, launch TMPGEnc and select File->MPEG Tools and select Simple Multiplex. Select Type MPEG-1 VideoCD, select your mpg as video and audio input and select out and hit Run to make a new working mpg file.

  9. spider55:

tried that just now, i get the following error in TMPGEnc:

    "Illegal MPEG audiostream"

    ??

    EDIT:

    the video is mpeg-1 Video 352x240 29.97 fps, 1150kbps
    the audio is MPEG-1 Audio Layer-2 44100Hz 224kbps

  10. Try in TMPGEnc MPEG Tools and select Merge & Cut.

Or try with MPEG-Corrector available in Tools section (Repair/Converters)

  11. Hahaha, damnit im going to kill myself.

    I tried the mpeg-corrector.
It goes through the whole thing, but it won't play the damn mpeg afterwords, same error.

Whether I open it in WMP 6.4 or the one packaged with xp (7.0?)

Realplayer One will open it but you can see all distorted video.

And all this would make sense, but this same exact VCD that this is all coming from, plays ABSOLUTELY fine on my Apex DVD player as a VCD!

I'm going to try some of those other programs to fix it tommorow night
    otherwise I may just redownload all 10 vcds = 28 episodes :)

  12. did you make the vcds yourself or did someone else make them (e.g. storebought)......maybe they are just bad files......

  13. I made them myself from some mpegs.

I think I originally used Adaptec cd creator to convert them as VCDs, back in the day, so they were only v1.1
but eventually I made a copy of them so I have them stored either on CD and on my hard drive as a .nrg file

I don't know how they could be "bad" though if they play as VCD 1.1 fine on my Apex DVD player.

  14. Why in the hell are you using Windows Media Player

Thats a crappy progaram made by Microsoft and it sucks so bad. Why dont you get a real program to run your VCDs or DVDs like

    WINDVD2000

Or Something else, Just not Windows Media Player.....It sucks so bad. I erased mine the first 5 mins I had my computer.

  15. Dude, I think most people would agree that for the simple use of watching an .mpeg, that Windows Media Player v6.4 (AND ONLY v6.4) is excellent, quick loading and overall one of the FEW good MS products.

Now don't get me wrong, the total OPPOSITE applies for anything OTHER than v6.4... v7.0 is a total load of bloatware as is any other higher versions. But 6.4 is a great and necessary application.

But I will try a DVD program and see if I fair any better.
I still just don't understand how a .dat file from a VCD 1.1 would play in a DVD player but not as an mpeg in WMP, when VCD 2.0 does this fine!

    Hmph!
