    Ok I have read all the posts and all of the guides and have a pretty good idea how to make a dvd-r. But if I want to make an exact copy of a dvd that is under 4.7 GB, do I have to do any authoring at all? Can I just rip with smartripper and burn? Or is it a step I must include. Please help because those damn dvd-r's are expensive!!

  2. Just use smartripper, and don't change a thing in the video_ts folder.
    Then use Nero(at least 5.5.8.0) to burn to dvd-r.

    You could use ifoedit and use the GET VTS SECTORS function on the two copied ifo files just to be sure, but i doubt that this is required.

    No authoring is needed(provided you have DVD burner like Pioneer A03}
    Use Dvd option in Nero and then choose disk copy.Simple.
