  1. I could have sworn I have opened an MPG or VOB file in Sound Forge in the past, but now I can't. I get this error message:

The Sony QuickTime plug-in was not able to initialize the QuickTime components on your system. It appears that QuickTime for Windows is not properly installed.

QuickTime files cannot be read or written without a full installation of the QuickTime version 7.1.6 or greater components, including the authoring components."
And, when clicking Okay, another error message follows:

Warning: An error occurred during the current operation.

The file format plugin for the specified format was not properly initialized.
I'm not quite sure what QuickTime have to do with MPG/VOB files, but nevertheless I did install it anyway, but to no avail.

I have tried this on two different operating systems (Windows Vista and Windows 7) in two different versions of Sound Forge 11.0, one of them being the very latest build 345. Is there no way to open such files in Sound Forge? I can almost say with 100% certainty that I have opened a VOB file in Sound Forge before. I never actually edited it, but I know it opened without this error message.

  2. Sound Forge Pro have built in plug-in to open MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 files

    I don't have QuickTime installed
and I can open vob files in Sound Forge Pro
check if folder mcplug2 exist in C:\Program Files (x86)\MAGIX\Sound Forge Pro 11.0\FileIO Plug-Ins location

if I rename mcplug2 folder and try open Vob file, I have this message:

Size:	68.3 KB

Try open Sound Forge Pro as Administrator
maybe the program have problem access plugin folder

  3. Hi!

    Thanks for answering.
I checked, and the subfolder mcplug2 exists in the FileIO Plug-Ins folder in both of the versions of Sound Forge Pro 11.0 that I have. I tried starting the program as administrator, but I get the same error message anyway. Very strange that this is happening in both Sound Forge Pro 11.0 builds, under two separate operating systems even.

  4. Some audio programmes require Quicktime to open files such as mp3. As it says it has an install error, why don't you re-install Quicktime?

some of the old sony apps had restrictions as to what they could do depending on which other sony apps you had installed. soundforge may not open mpeg-2 video unless you also have vegas installed.

  7. Maybe try reset mcplug2 folder security permission.
    How do I do that?

As it says it has an install error, why don't you re-install Quicktime?
I did, but I still get the same error.

But I have opened VOB files in Sound Forge in the past, and I have never had Vegas installed on any computer...

I've not had Quicktime in at least 10 years.
I've not had Vegas installed for at least 5 years now.
I still use SoundForge, both 6 and 9.

    Both open MPEG files.
Neither open VOB files. A VOB is a DVD-Video authored MPEG. At best, it's hit-or-miss.

SF is one of the few programs I have that's never acted fluky, on multiple systems, several versions.

All this said, only reason to open MPEG in SF is to be lazy, not pre-convert audio. You don't want it to re-encode the video, and it doesn't save without re-encode. Open MPEG, save as WAV or whatever, not back to MPEG.

In my experience, Sonic Foundry/Sony programs (the older versions that I use, at any rate) want the Main Concept MPEG plugin installed to read/write mpeg1 & mpeg2 audio.

I followed your instructions and this is what my log says about all instances of mcplug2.dll:

So, "success" for the most part, but still it differs slightly from your log. Is anything about my log indicating something is not loading properly?
I also searched the log for "mc_demux_mp2.dll", but there are no instances at all of that dll file.

I'm sorry I'm not familiar with that plugin. Was it ever included with older versions of Sound Forge, because I never installed that plugin manually?

I believe it was included with SF, ACID & Vegas. There's also a separate plugin for mp3 encoding.

  14. Just to let everyone know, I installed an earlier build of Sound Forge 10.0, and then the VOB files load. Really strange.
