  1. I am trying to archive some family vhs tapes that we have and I recorded the video file with a Hauppauge HD PVR2 in Ts format since MP4 didn't allow me to go over 4 gigs. There is a spot halfway into the movie that the camcorder stopped and restarted and it captured this section this just fine. When I play the source file in VLC the audio is in sync. When I take the same file and burn it onto a dvd, as soon as the movie gets to that halfway point the audio becomes out of sync. What could cause the source file to be ok but the authored dvd to have this issue? I have tried to use AVStoDVD and Cyberlink PowerDirector and both have the same issue.

In the AVStoDVD preferences, at the Avisynth tab, set video and audio source filters to FFMpegSource.
Save the preferences and create a new project with your troublesome file.

If it still glitches you may have to cut it in two and convert them separately

So I just tried this and the dvd took 3 days to encode non stop for some reason. I just tried the dvd and it does the same thing. What else could I try?

    A few suggestions.

    1. Post a mediainfo (text mode) report of the original Ts capture.
    2. There is a log file from avstodvd in the highest level folder from your encode. Post that here as well.
    3. Do a new capture - 30 seconds before the camera issue and 30 seconds after. Upload that here so that we can hopefully also see the problem.

I do not see the 4 gig issue unless you are capturing in HD. Hence the reason for the above.

    Thnx.

Will await the new capture. At present I do see a slight variation between the original run time and the encoded one. Albeit a few fractions of a second.

I am more concerned with the capture inasmuch that both video and audio are highly compressed >> the video is now recomprseed to some 50% of original whereas the audio is left alone. There was a time when mp2 audio was not compatable for ntsc dvd. Pls confirm that you are in ntsc land.

Might I also suggest you do another short capture as originally requested but using a different audio codec which forces re-encoding. Upload both captures.

  7. So I encoded the TS file to mpeg with CyberLink Power Director and now when I add the file to AVS2DVD there is 0MS audio delay so I think this would fix my problem but the file is 5.6GB so it doesn't fit on a DVD5. There must be way to fit 1.5h hours of VHS footage on a DVD5?

video file size has always equaled bitrate x time. so you need to encode to the proper bitrate to fit on a dvd5. use a calculator like - http://dvd-hq.info/bitrate_calculator.php#Calculator to make sure everything fits.

there are a lot more experinced people on here than me
    BUT
6389 bit rate from a VHS tape ?
I would try a new capture at 4000 bit rate ( i really think there will be NO visual difference ) this will fit 2 hrs with NO problem
i would also do (2) captures stopping then restarting at your break point
when converted to DVD, they will play straight through non stop, depending on the settings used in the authoring software
in most cases titles/files play continuously

of course you can use the existing file, author a dvd for double layer 8.5gig disc
then use DVDshrink, to create a 4.7g single layer dvd

I don't think I can specify the bitrate when capturing with my Hauppauge HD PVR2 and their software. I will try to create 2 captures but what I notice when I view the VHS tape on the tv, the sound comes on and then video follows shortly after but it seems to be in sync, well if its out of sync on the VHS, you can hardly tell. But I never thought of adding two video files when authoring the DVD, I am pretty sure this would make them play straight through like you mentionned.

you can reduce the bitrate in avs2dvd
you can specify you want it to fit a single layer DVD
    and it will reduce it
you can edit video settings and specify the bit rate you want

Any suggestions on what to do? Step by step maybe with screenshots if possible? Sorry I am not too good at authoring video.

  19. You still have microsoft codec set for MP2 audio. Switch to LAV Filter, than toggle off audio direct copy in Edit Title > Audio.

You do not have to burn discs to test a DVD output, you can just play a DVD structure with VLC, before burning.

Ok I am trying this at the moment. I tried to create an ISO file but it never worked. I will try just creating the dvd structure. Will report back shortly.

A month ago you promised to upload a short sample video with the highlighted problem.

The whole purpose of this is to see if the error is replicated or even if it can be fixed. Bear in mind that it was already stated that you should re-encode the audio which might itself fix it.

  23. I don't feel like putting the footage online as it's family content but how can I re-encode the audio with a different codec? can you explain the steps?

Ok. I respect that decision although you could have made it a month ago and we could have moved on somewhat quicker.

I use a somewhat older version of the program but I believe the principle is the same. Select the Title Menu (Top of screen) and chose 'Edit Title'. From the 'Audio' tab un-check 'Auto Audio Setup' and uncheck 'Keep DVD Compliant Audio'. From the dropdown list select AC3 and 256 (or 384) kbps. Click OK to finish the setup.

Burn to folders >> Output >> DVD Folder Structure and test with vlc

I would try to repackage the source file.
First of all demux the mp2 and open in an audio editor (Audacity is free if you don't have one) and save it out as a wave file (PCM)

Open the source ts file in MKVToolnix and add the new wave file. Deselect the mp2 from the output
and mux the file to a new MKV, which should now contain only the video and the new wave file.

Play the new mkv and make sure it stays in sync. If it does use this new file for you AVStoDVD project.

As has been suggested, don't waste any more DVD media, create the video_ts and test first on VLC, mpc-hc, etc,etc

So how do I demux? I am unable to load the .ts file in audacity.

You should be able to use tsmuxer, or you couild create an MKV from the existing file as it is and
then use MKVextract GUI to extract the audio

Even the ffmpeg line command will work:
    ffmpeg -i c:\your_path\file.ts -vn -f mp2 c:\your_path\output.mp2

Ok so I just tried your instructions, demux with txmuxer, convert mpa audio file to wav with audacity than muxed ts file to mkv with audacity wav audio file and disabled mp2 audio but audio is still not synced.

I didn't necessarily expect it to be. If it's out of synch in the new mkv file,
then you can fix it in the audio editor and recreate the steps using the new wav.

For example, if the audio jumps a second ahead or delayed after 45 minutes adjust it in the audio editor,
by adding/deleting a small selection at the point where it happens (that's what the audio editor is for)

  30. Is there a utility to edit the video smilar to Audacity for audio, so that I can cut part of the video? The part where the videos goes blue because the camera was turned off and backed on. I would like to remove this part from the footage of the video then I could play with the audio in audacity and get them to sync.
