  1. Hi,
I posted this in the Newbie forum but I haven't got any replies yet. So, this the problem:
I am having quality problems when I use the directshow Multimedia File Reader (VFAPI) to convert a divx file (.avi) to vcd format (tmpgenc's 2.53 VCD PAL default template)
The VCD movie that is created using this reader, results in a movie with a lot of jumps when any kind of motion is involved.
When I use the other 2 readers (AVI2-OpenDML, AVI-VFW) there are some jumps in the resulting movie also but the result is much smoother compared to directshow.
The AVI2-OpenDML & AVI-VFW don't convert sound from DivX files, that's why I cant use them.
Using bbmpeg I get smooth output, but it doesn't accept sound, so I have to use more tools (ant time!) to do the job.

    Versions:
    Tmpgenc: 2.53
    DivX: 5.01 Pro
    DirectX: 8.1

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks in advance.
PS. I could mail the source and the result to anybody interested (<3MB both)

  2. Hi,
have you tried the method as described elsewhere in these forums and guides
    1. open avi using VirtualDub and save the sound as an AVI (you may wish to select a different audio codec, say uncompressed)
    2. then encode using TMPGEnc using your choise of file engine but open the WAV file as your audio source.

If this does not work I would be happy to look at your files. Just email them to me at cmacleo1@bigpond.net.au

  3. I have already tried this; it is working only with the AVI2(OpenDML) File Reader (still I get some jumps) but this involves one more step: to extract the sound as WAV and then use Tmpgenc.
I was wondering if you can do the whole thing in one step using Tmpgenc.

I will mail you the files to see for yourself.

    Regards,
    Mijalis.

  4. Help !! I Have DivX-AVI and x.sub files (second file subtitles) I want to convert it to NAPA DAV conformal VCD which works now fine just with TMPEG !! Very simple 0,3x speed with my Cel2@960 GHz. BUT how can I include subtitles to the VCD with TMPEG? I do not like to use 5 other programs to include subtitles in to the mpg file :(( Burning with latest NERO works also fine ...
    Thanks for any advice

  5. You need to frameserve the divx file using VirualDub and the subtitle filter, there are instructions to this in this site.

  6. I had a fair play around with the files. Interesting!
I got the same problems as you encoding the source avi file. Please note I run Windows 2000, latest TMPGEnc (2.53) and I also use a Martox G400 video card (5.82 drivers). I tried a lot of variations and the only thing I could find is

The AVI uses DIVX3.11 low motion codec. I converted it to use Huffyuv codec with VirtualDub and encoded the resultant AVI. The mpg was much smoother but not completely. Smoother than either of the two encodes you gave me but still a jerk or two.

The problem I believe is then a matter of how TMPGEnc handles DIVX 3.11 encoded AVIs (or at least this one). I suppose you could try frameserving from VirtualDub, converting codec to Huffyuv and then encoding. Also posibly try using other versions of Divx like 4.12/5.01 (I'm using 5.01 and 3.11 installed, 3.11 for audio codec)

  7. I tried many types in vdub, even frameserving (or saving as AVI) with uncompressed (RGB) in full processing mode and then encoding in VCD with Tmpgenc and I get almost the same results without using vdub (tmpg with avi2opendml reader)

    Thanks anyway..

  8. I found the problem:
The source divx was NTSC(23.97fps) and I was converting it through TMPGEnc to PAL(25fps).
When I used the NTSCFilm template of TMPGenc it was converting it almost perfectly.

  9. No it does not work with virtual dub: I cannot open .vdr file "uknown error" while trying to open it.
    (source is DivX4)

    What to do now??

    regards
