Hi My pc is locked down, it only has Windows Media Player 12.0.7601 and I can't install any additional codecs.
I have been trying to play files of various types using WMP12: MPG, AVI.. and sometimes they work but sometimes I encounter issues such as no sound, or sound that is out of sync.
But I have Any Video Converter on another Pc! so I can change the format of my videos, what format is my best bet to be compatible with WMP12?
    Thanks

Who recommended that software to you, when there are also really free, full featured, high quality converters?

    But well...

Windows out of the box, no additions? Check if it can create WMV.

And then, read about the difference between container and content formats. Like, AVI is a container for hundreds of possible content formats, so no surprise that some are suppported and others are not.

Depending on your Windows version, some other formats may be supported as well. Under Windows 10, I would assume that the MP4 container with AVC video (H.264) and AAC audio has a good chance.

You can probably also use MPC-HC as "portable" player, it does not need any installation into the Windows system, just unpack the archive. It uses LAV Filters natively as internal decoders for a large variety of container and content formats.
