PAL Interlaced DVD to progressive

I have an interlaced PAL DVD that I can't seem to convert properly to progressive. So far I've come across scenes/footage with what looks like 50, 37.5, 25 or 12.5 unique frames when bobbed. If I use QTGMC, it leaves ghosting (ghostingsample2.png) and causes wobbly lines when the animation doesn't have 50 unique fields/frames(?).

Do I need specific QTGMC settings, a different deinterlacer, encode it with a variable framerate or is the video just that bodged?

QTGCM() quite often leaves little ghosts like that. Different settings may show them more than others. You won't really see them at normal playback speeds. Regarding the jerkiness of the animation, it's an odd mix but that's just the way it was done. I'd probably just QTGMC and encode at 50 fps.
