Hi everyone, anyone have any experience in changing a full retail M/soft Win 7 Home edition licence to another computer/laptop. My laptop has just gone south (accidental damage) and I am seriously thinking of changing the licence to another laptop . Anyone with knowledge and/or experience of this procedure please feel free to share experiences advice. Cheers visionman

  2. It it came with the computer (like an OEM copy) then it probably can not be transferred to another. Otherwise everyone would be doing this. If it's full retail like you say, then you have the disk and you should be able to install it onto another computer. But I read somewhere that you can't install win7 on some computers that use latest CPU's without a big hassle.

  3. Agree w/ TreeTops. If you do have a full retail copy OTOH, you should be able to just install it on the new computer. When activation fails, you call MS support and explain that the old computer is dead. In theory this works, but I have not tried it. Be nice to the person on the phone - you are at their mercy!

Something to consider (and this addresses TreeTops' point about CPU compatibility) is migrating your old PC to a virtual machine running inside your new PC. This is great if you have a complex installation, and you want to get back to work quickly. It's no problem if the old computer is dead, as long as the hard drive is readable. But the same licensing issues will apply.

Download it to iso, burn to DVD or USB and install it.

This is illegal advise - unless he require to use "assistive" technology - side to this Windows 10 may be highly problematic and for some people it is not acceptable.

You've NEVER used the zoom function in windows built-in assistive technologies? It is the EXACT same windows 10 version everyone else is using. Microsoft assistive technologies is not turned on by default

  7. visionman If you want to upgrade to windows 10 you can do it legally. If you still have the install media you can install Windows 7 on your new computer than upgrade to Windows 10. You can also download the same version of Windows 10 as the Windows 7 you have. From your post this would be the Home version. Install and when asked for a key select I do not have a key. Also install as a local account and not a MS account. After Windows 10 is installed you can use your Windows 7 key to activate Windows 10. You can also sign in to a MS account if you want. Here's a link to a web site if you need help doing this. https://www.tenforums.com/

Just to add, make sure the proper PC drivers are available. Windows takes care of most drivers,
except sometimes touch pads or other propitiatory drivers.

But I would check first with your PC manufacturer to make sure they are all available for your chosen OS.
If you do a 'clean install' by wiping the PC drive, they will disappear also.

And manufacturers audio and VGA drivers usually perform better than the generic Windows drivers.
