I've been given some very old .RM files to check before deleting.
Unfortunately I can't find anything to play them.
They seem to have multiple video and audio streams in the
same file from what I can tell with a hex editor. (audio type cook ?)
mediainfo recognises the file but doesnt give any stream data at all so
that cant even parse the file.
Does anyone know how I can get these to play?
TIA

Have you tried to open it with Real Player?
I found this looking on the Web:
A file with this extension may be a Real Media for Real Player. -
Yes I've tried it with real player - it doesnt play it. - I'm guessing its some sort of streaming format they may have used for
registered playback or multiple speeds or something. They did so many stupid formats back then I stopped bothering with them at the time. -

perhaps MPC-HC ++ RealAlternative will give you what you're looking for.
I've already met those pesky multi-audio and multi-video RM files, but I actually don't remember how I dealt with them
I am just supposing that Gabest's RealMediaSplitter (OR MPC-HC itself) does support RealMedia stream-switching.
MAYBE ffmpeg can remux the contents of the problematic source into several single-video and single-audio RM files.

On a 64-bit edition of Windows, use syswow64 instead of system32.Last edited by Marsia Mariner; 14th Oct 2017 at 11:35. Reason: clarity

If there's nothing wrong with the file, https://www.videohelp.com/software/Real-Alternative probably still works.
Edit: There are probably security concerns with installing such and old, unsupported program on your system. I would recommend you install and run it for this one operation, and then run System Restore to completely remove it when you're done. -
Thanks to everyone for the suggestions.
The only thing I could find to play them was just called realplayer itself.
Nothing else even came close.
I DONT recommend anyone ever install it.
To call it spyware would be an insult. This thing is jusk plain criminalware.
But if you want to open your computer up to every hacker on the planet just install this thing.
At least I know whats in the files now - he doesnt wan to delete them but I've told him thats
the best thing to do - the real format was always a dog - it seems it never improved. -
Did you try potplayer?
