Sounds like a bitrate problem. Usually your PC can handle higher bitrates than a standalone DVD player. Maybe it's best to stick to the VCD or SVCD standards by using the templates in TMPGEnc. It's likely that your DVD player is designed to play only VCD (and maybe SVCD) compliant Mpegs. You can check the DVD player compatibility list on the left for more info on your player, or you may add your findings to this list after you've done some experimenting.

usually the best way to solve this is to use virtualdub to save the audio from the avi into a wav file.
then, in tmpgenc you select the video source like normal, but select the wav you just created as audio.
viola! you get a nice mpeg with sound and all. this applies for vcd, you talked about dvd format but my guess is that youo don't have a dvd burner. or do you?
