Rip Subtitles From One ISO to Another

I have 2 DVDs of the same movie, one is an older 4-3 (modified to fit your screen!), & the other is widescreen.
The widescreen as it turns out is for the russian market & subtitles were created by someone with 'english as a second language'. The translation is very convoluted. The 4-3 one is ok but ya only get '½' the picture. I rip my movies (I do own them) to iso & watch them with my media player, always.

I am extremely hard of hearing & between audio & subtitles I do a respectively decent job of following the films, but with this 'russian2english' subtitle, well, , , , I cant follow the film with it turned on, its that bad.

Is there an easy way to do this??

(with movie only ripped, both movies are exactly the same length)

I would suggest loading the original ISO file to MakeMKV and choose which audio and subtitles options you prefer.

Picking up on what hardy said I would transfer both movies to MakeMKV so that you have easy access to audio and subtitles from both, you can use gMKVExtractGui to extract the subtitles and audio if needed. Then open the wide screen version in MKVMergeGui and drag the sub you want into the program and untick the russian/english track. Then mux. If both DVD's are same in terms of length and fps and no edits for different markets done then with a bit of luck they will sync ok.

So I cant copy subtitles from/to an iso or dvd folders? My media player does not play mkv files, if i use makemkv to add subs, can I convert back to dvd folder/iso? (from mkv that is)

Is makemkv the only way to extract subs?

The 4-3 disk is english/spanish audio & eng/span subtitles-the w/s is english/russian audio & eng/rus subs.

Replacing the subtitles in an ISO with those from another ISO like you are asking is probably the least easy way I can think of to make use of the subtitles from the other ISO. If you could tell which media player you're using maybe easier solutions could be suggested. Also, if the subtitles has to be softcoded, ie selectable or hardcoded could be used.

Argosy media player, out of business a few years, I have a few, 1st was Lasonic DVD + hdd player, 'dvd folder' (but not isos), newer ones (I have a few) play iso's + more, but not mkv.

Not the only way but it is simple and straight forward—if you can't play MKV files then you could convert the MKV to ISO (DVD type) using IMGBurn and selecting the tile "create image file from files/folders

I'm not familiar with the Argosy media players but from what I can gather from the net some are limited to SD/video-DVD file structure/ISO in their file support.

Then I see no "easy way" of doing what you want, The most cumbersome way would be if you wanted to keep the menus etc on the widescreen version and replace the subtitles with those from the 4-3. A less cumbersome way would be to create a new DVD/ISO. Here is how I would do it.

1. Use MakeMKV to rip the widescreen version to a single file.

2. Use VSRip to extract the subtitles from the 4-3 version and name the idx/sub file the same as the file from 1.

3. Use AVStoDVD to create a DVD file folder using the files from 1+2. If you want AVStoDVD to create an ISO you'll have to install ImgBurn separately. Since the files are DVD compliant no re-encode is done.

If I have dvd folders of the movie only, dvdshrink easily removes (whichever) audio streams & subtitles. There is no software for extracting a particular subtitle? Why must this be done in an mkv 'package'? If they are so easy to remove, why cant they just be extracted instead? This mkv thing seems like converting dollars to rubles to francs & then back to dollars, , , , , I dont understand.

I paid $1 each at a thrift store for the dvds (at diff times) I watched the dvd disk from the library, I am just curious as to how to go about this sort of editing, now.

Dump the ISOs and get them back to VOB, IFO, BUP format.
1. You demux both DVDs (PGCDemux)
2. You add the SUP subtitle file from the one to the other while reauthoring the DVD (Muxman).
3. If you want back the menus and other stuff, replace the old DVD video with the newly reauthored version (VobBlanker, or sometimes PGCEdit).

Why must this be done in an mkv 'package'?

It is not a "must". It could be done with PGCDemux, VOB2MPG, DVDVob2Mpg, AVStoDVD using VTSxx.IFO as input. However MakeMKV also removes copy protection whereas the others would require somwething like AnyDVD or DVDFab Decrypter to be running.

A lotta people push mkv container, which is why I initially said iso. In previous posts here on other threads, I have mentioned the same (iso). When Argosy closed down, I scrounged up about 7 of various models. I have (back in its box) a WD 3d tv" player, a piece of garbage, A Dune player (with 2½" bay), much better than the WD, but I still MUCH prefer the Argosy. The Argosy doesent play mkv files. I am 70 yr old, they will last me I think long enough, I have W-7 & 10 comps but use XP. I am set in my ways, , , , , ,
