I have captured several tapes using an uncompressed codec (CHQX) via. AmaRecTV from a USB capture device.
Three example resultant files (720x576, 25p, PAL):I used HandBrake v1.07 to compress File 2 to MP4 using the program's 'Fast 576p25' MP4 preset.
- File 1 - 1h 6m (8.9 GB)
- File 2 - 1h 38m (16.5 GB)
- File 3 - 4h 4m (40.5 GB)
Whilst the file size reduced to 4.1 GB, the quality is visible not as good as the original capture.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Although I think I can not help you with encoding settings, but don't use 25p if you want to preserve the motion resolution of 25i of the VHS tapes. Don't change the resolution if possible
The more things are adjusted while transcoding or encoding the worse the result.
x264 is very nice. x265 is also very nice, but maybe playing equipment can not handle it, because it is quite new. But for specific encoding settings here are other guys around who know what they are doing
