I installed a blu-ray drive in my computer. Using the 64-bit version of VLC, I tried to play my first blu-ray disc today.

It says it can't play the disc. (Keeps saying "Your input can't be opened.")

There was a video on YouTube saying you need to download a "key database". (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zHdZWMb3qZk)

I've looked for the link he promised would be listed below the video, but couldn't find one. I've poked around on the VLC site. Can't find it there either. (Well, the video is over a year old. Things may have changed.)

My VLC installation is fairly new, and it insists it's the newest version (no updates being available). It works fine with .mp3 files and DVDs, as well as video files.

    Anyone have any ideas?

I don't mean to be disrespectful, but is that a safe link? I now know it seems to be the same one the guy used in the video, but it doesn't appear to be from VLC/Videolan.

The link provided is in the videohelp software section on the website you're currently viewing. A direct link to the plugin download is farther down on the linked page under "More information and other downloads". That link takes you to vlc at http://vlc-bluray.whoknowsmy.name/.

And if you read the comments on that yt page you will glean that many BDs will not work simply because the key is not in the database or not available elsewhere.

Add that the instructions only refer to Win10 and a Win7 install is different.

I'll stick to PowerDVD and Passkey. Yeah. These cost $$$ but atleast they will work without hassle.

While VLC will play some discs (as noted above) it does not officially support Blu-Ray and will not play all discs.

I finally went to download the Blu-Ray codec, and got this on the page that came up-

    Your connection is not secure

The owner of vlc-bluray.whoknowsmy.name has configured their website improperly. To protect your information from being stolen, Firefox has not connected to this website.

I got something similar when using EDGE.

    Anyone got any ideas?

Seems as if the security certificate at the site has expired ...

  9. A more up to date database, done by users, can be found here.

To play my own discs I had to extract the keys myself and add it to the database, you'll have to do the same if your discs are not in that file.
