  1. I have followed steps exactly here, and I can even get a list of output formats, but when I try any of them I get a "protocol not found" error.

    e.g.:

    Code:

  2. Ok I figured it out. I installed youtube-dl using Brew on Mac, but did not have ffmpeg installed.

    Code:
    brew install youtube-dl
    brew install ffmpeg
If you get a Protocol Not Found error make sure you are not using avconf but instead ffmpeg with youtube-dl. In my case I got youtube-dl to use ffmpeg by brew uninstalling avconf https://github.com/rg3/youtube-dl/issues/3590

Hi! First post here. Been following this thread for a while trying to work around this problem myself. Thanks to everyone for trying to be so helpful to all of us struggling with CBC videos. I myself have tried all the suggestions here and still can't seem to grab this video from CBC. Please can anyone help me. Thank you so much

Now it's telling me it's not recognized as an internal or external command, operable or batch file. Am I entering it wrong?

I'm entering it as C:\Users\(Name)>youtube-dl https://watch.cbc.ca/media/media/holiday-programming/episode-7/38e815a-010106efe6d on Command Prompt. I'm so confused right now. Usually I'm not bad with command prompt but with cbc I'm stumped.

Would it be basically something like this for example?

    C:\Documents\Newsletters\Summer2018.pdf

if so then can you explain to me if i've done something wrong with the youtube dl setup. Mine is an .exe file so everytime I double click it , it pops up for like two second shows some sort of message(never had a chance to fully read it) and then disappears. Am I supposed to install it or something I'm just confused.

I'm sorry if I'm asking a real stupid question with obvious answers. I am quite good with the computer in general but I've always struggled with these types of things. Even when I used command prompt to do a scan of my drive after it wouldn't open it took me a while to figure out how exactly to type it all in to trigger the scan to start.

Of if anyone is able to rip it for me cause I feel terrible asking so many questions which I feel are prob dumb. But as I said I am not expert in this field.

The problem isn't with the cbc part. youtube-dl must be in the current working directory, in Windows' search path, or you must specify the path to the program. For example, if the exe is on your desktop:

    Code:
    C:\Users\(Name)\Desktop\youtube-dl https://watch.cbc.ca/media/media/holiday-programming/episode-7/38e815a-010106efe6d
Or maybe you should check out one of the GUI front ends for the program.

  12. I was able to download the video with this command:
    Code:
    youtube-dl -f 1005+AACLC-2_0-English https://watch.cbc.ca/media/media/holiday-programming/episode-7/38e815a-
    010106efe6d
QUESTION: If I tried to watch the Canadian video in the browser, I got geo-error (I am in USA). So I put a proxy (69.70.25.172:31881) into the browser and then I could watch the video. However, when I downloaded with youtube-dl (see above code) I didn't need any proxy. Why is that?

    To kristinaz91,
The command prompt window (how you use youtube-dl) requires an IQ of 101.72 or higher (as verified by IQMaster.com). If your IQ is lower than that, you will have a very difficult (but not impossible) time to use youtube-dl. However, most people in that situation will just give up or find an easier to use GUI software.

Sometimes the country check is done at the browser level, not the at the lower level of actually downloading the files/segments.

I’ve used command prompt before it’s just for some reason I struggled to use it along with this particular program. Honestly it seemed quite easy when I read the instructions on here but it was just the fact youtube-dl kept shutting down on me each time I opened it. I've now realized that it probably had something to do with the fact you need to use command prompt with youtube-dl and when I did I don't think I was entering it in correctly. But I do wanna say thank you for ripping it for me. I greatly appreciate it. I will for my own knowledge try the additional info one of the members provided me with earlier on today and see if I can figure it out tomorrow for future use.

  15. What I did was create a new folder on my desktop called "youtube-dl 2018 12 28".
I downloaded the newest youtube-dl to that folder from here at videohelp.
I also downloaded the newest ffmeg to that folder.
FFmeg was a zip file so I unzipped it.

I went inside that folder and there was another folder inside called "Bin". I clicked on that and selected those three files and copied them. I came back out to the "youtube-dl 2018 12 28" folder and pasted those three files so that they are now with youtube-dl.

To get the command line prompt what I do is get out to my desktop and I press the shift key and then right click on the "youtube-dl 2018 12 28" folder. You will notice in the list that shows up the fifth one down says "open a command prompt here". I select that and I have my command prompt window pop up and it stays open.

Now what I do is go to my browser and find the show I am interested in. I copy the url and paste that into notepad so that I know where it is. I often have a hard time finding that m3u8 file but I am finding that youtube-dl seems to find it for me now just from the url itself when I pasted it into "youtube-dl".

Now onto that command prompt line:

You type in youtube-dl then press the space bar once and then paste in that url followed by pressing the enter button. This will give you the best quality video and audio on the website, just let it download away and wait for it to finish. Check the "youtube-dl 2018 12 28" folder when you see the program has finished and the file is there. Personally I am satisfied with less than the best video so I usually usually look for a 640x360 file with a high bit rate.

I think you should master how to let the program download the best quality for you first then move on to the additional steps for selecting a medium quality video that suited just to your preference.

I struggled and I learned from what was taught in this thread and others. Don't think you are stupid, it takes a while to get a grasp of how to use the program. As I said I am a lost cause using the developer tools to find the m3u8 at least these days, I did have a grasp of it for awhile but I got out of practice and I am finding I can't find them again. Maybe they did something in youtube-dl that it searches and finds it itself and if so that has made it a lot easier for me. I hope I was of some help.

Thank you for typing all this out and trying to help me out. I’m still trying to figure the program out so glad to know I’m not the only one who finds it a bit difficult. I am hoping I will eventually get the hang of it like you guys all did *fingers crossed*

Use a browser's Developer Tools (F12) to get the m3u8 URL (Network tab) then use that URL with youtube-dl. I just downloaded that particular episode with youtube-dl.

So that's what I was trying to do. Do you have what you used in terminal to download it? I 4-5 options that have m3u8 in it when I'm watching the video. Not sure entirely what to pick out of these.

Then this is what I used while trying to download it in terminal. I got an error everytime.

    Code:
    youtube-dl -F https://mobilehls-vh.akamaihd.net/i/prodVideo/entertainment/CBC_Entertainment_VMS/176/251/Republic_of_Doyle_S02E01_2014-07-23_,960x540_250,852x480_180,640x360_120,640x360_90,370x208_50,320x180_35,0kbps.mp4.csmil/master.m3u8

  22. LOL. You're right. It's gotten easier to download from CBC. You don't have to search for the m3u8 URL anymore. A long time ago simply using the URL of the web page like that worked. Eventually CBC changed and you had to get the m3u8 URL. I guess they've changed back.

I guess I should have tried that first. Thanks for the help! It's downloading now. Will that download the highest quality version available?

Also side note, I'm from the US and using a proxy, is anyone else having an issue with the first season videos of Republic of Doyle showing up? I get this error: Error 4 | 0aa274d1-c1d0-4a45-a692-d81ea835bc4d
