  1. Ok guys, I've done it. This morning I successfully capture at 640X480, 480X480 and 352X480, both mpeg1 and mpeg2, vbr on and off! We have all the right tools at our disposal, but you have to be very careful about the order that we do things! But it works, and the quality was great - makes me pissed that I've already done about 40 hours worth of VHS-C transfer using a 1.75Mpbs 352X240 mpeg1 profile

Anyway, here's how. To review, I'm using Windows 98SE, ATI TV-WONDER PCI (not USB or VE, but it might work?) with ATI MMC 7.6

First, create a custom profile, for ease, name it SVCD-MPEG, set it to whatever you want, because we are gonna change it using Stinky's tool. EXIT ATI MMC, this is crucial, full exit (I would even shut the ATI Launcher). Open Stinky's tool, the version made for 7.5/7.6 - select the SVCD-MPEG profile you just created and click EDIT PROFILE. Now, look towards the bottom of the window and select PRESETS. Select Stinky's SVCD profile (not standard, and not the "hyper"). Hit update, go back to MMC 7.6 - DO NOT CLICK SETUP!!!!!! Doing this will cause the reg file to overwrite the changes you just made in setup. All options should have been set BEFORE going to Stinky's tool. CLICK RECORD, watch your preview window go black (preview appears to be unsupported at any size other than 240 vertical) but watch the timer roll!! When finished, exit the program, play the file to verify success!

You don't have to stick with 480X480 mpeg2, but let's use this as a starting point. From there, you can make any changes you need to the profile, (I've switched to mpeg1, VBR on, 352X480). Post success (or failures) here...

ps - one thing I've also found. Any bitrates below 3Mpbs just don't cut it for anything larger than 240. I would suggest setting them to this height and use VBR if you are worried about space constraints.

  2. Thanks for the post!! I have been trying to figure out how in sam hill top capture 352x240, rather than the default 320x240 on the AIW. Now I can capture correctly.

    jpb1977,

I'm VERY glad that ya got it to work

Now, maybe others out there can follow.

    IT CAN WORK.

By the way, my (crazy) method of how I got it to work,
(long ago, might I add [year ago]) is for when you want
to do AVI capturing. BUT, you can STILL change the
resolution (in the MPEG section of the reg. ) (via my
crazy method) and it applies to doing MPEG1/2 captures as
    well.

Mind you, I USED to use MMC (year ago) for caps till I ended
up wanting something w/ more flexibility, etc., which is how
I ended up with AVI_IO (sometimes vdub)

Stinky's TOOL is the way to go, as it provides a more
clean way of making any changes, and then some. I too made an
app to make these changes to the reg. files, but this app is
private, and not to mention, it's not as full as Stinky's. It
is (or was) only to change 1 or two reg. setting (AVI, and MPEG1
settings) and that was it. So, please don't ask for
    it. It's not available. Thanks.

By the way, it really isn't necessary to cap more than 352x480
if you're making xSVCD (or CVD's [my own variation(s) of a CVD
template I concocked up) as I make these w/ great
success! ) ...480x480 looks good on your PC, but when you make
these SVCD's, you're killing band-width for that extra bit of
res. of 480, and then some. Save some resources and do 352
instead - using Stinky's tool of course.

    Good luck all.
