  1. Hi

Any idea where I can obtain this....?

    Thanks

Couldn’t locate decompressor for format ‘FMP4’ (unknown)

VirtualDub requires a video for Windows(VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player are not suitable.

  2. ffdshow should have a decoder for it.

Alternatively, use ffmpeg input plugin for VirtualDub or VirtualDub FilterMod which has such plugins integrated.

    Thanks

  4. The newest VirtualDub FilterMod can be found here. Unpack, start VirtualDub.exe and Fiile->Open and select your video file. If you receive the same error try again File->Open but this time at the bottom of the file open dialog select "FFMpeg (all formats)" before opening the file.

  6. Great all working fine now many thanks !

One last thought, because presumably it wasn't working to begin with will it be necessary to keep updating the VDub updates regularly, or will this working one be fine indefinitely....?

  7. The reason VirtualDub (the official version) wasn't working to begin with is it requires you to have an appropriate decoder installed and if it can't find one it'll complain.
ffdshow is a bunch of decoders rolled into one (for want of a better description) so installing ffdshow allows VirtualDub to decode all the common formats.

VirtualDub FilterMod is a modified version that comes with it's own decoders.

There's also an Input plugin for the official VirtualDub called FFMpeg Input Plugin that offers similar functionality.

The official VirtualDub can't open many file types and is generally used with AVIs, whereas with the FFMpeg Input Plugin installed it can open all the common types such as MP4 or MKV etc.
    VirtualDub FilterMod has similar abilities.

There's no need to keep updating the programs so they'll keep opening a particular file. Once the correct decoder is installed (if required) VirtualDub will be able to open it forever, but it doesn't hurt to upgrade occasionally if you plan on using it regularly. Bug fixes or additional functionality etc.
