Is it possible to do conversion from avi or divx to mpg1 or mpeg 2 with a 233Mhz with 128 sdram or will it not work. There is no such things as video or soundcard, i'll just want to be able to use my normal computer at all time.

It depends how long you want to encode.Min. requirement:Pentium lll 650
mhz(SSE) or Athlon with Direct Show. -
What do mean by "how long" is there a different if i want to encode a minute or an hour??
-
Encoding is entirely CPU dependent. Sure it'll be possible, however it will take a long time. FYI - on a P3 866 Encoding DivX .avi to VCD takes me approx. a 3 to 1 ratio - 3 minutes to encode 1 minute of source clip

My desktop computer currently runs at 225Mhz and only has 96MB EDO ram (4MB used for video).
The encoding process take a long time with computers this slow (by today's standards). For example, I can do a full dvd rip and encode to vcd with very little problems. However, the final encoding time using tmpgenc is 30-40 hrs. Since I use my laptop most of the time, this doesn't bother me. I have been able to decrease the encoding time significantly by using vfapi reader and vitural dub to create and split "pseudo" avi files prior to using tmpgenc.
But I was wondering, does using and external audio encoder (toolame) and freq convertor help with the processing time or just provides better output at a cost of slowing the process further? -
go buy a new computer cheapass. Really tho thats just pitiful, not even a p2. you can get a athlon with board+ram for round 200bux.

When all the world think you may be a genius, don't open your mouth to dispell any doubt. My computer is just fine the way it is. In fact, I own 27!!!! When doing new projects I use the one mentioned in case a program corrupts the system. In fact this one also has infrared capabilities you probably haven't even conceived of yet.
So keep your dumbass comments to yourself. -
xing mpeg encoder can encode twice as fast as tmpgenc and with good quality, but supports avi only.

I would advise to you to get a faster computer too. The computer you have will do the job but you are looking at days to get what you want with any quality. My current work system is a Athlon 1600 XP with 768MB of RAM. This morning I left tmpgenc encoding a 1 hour clip with 2 pass VBR and Normal quality. It will take it 3 hours 52 minutes to complete it.
Encoding is nothing more than brute cpu power. Extra RAM won't help and neather will fast harddrives. The faster the cpu the better.
