vidcoder encoding

Hi, I'm a newbie and learning video encoding. I am about to encoding some dvds (two and a half men) I wonder if someone could suggest some settings.
I did some tests and these are the results.

CRF 20 at medium speed: 128 MiB

I took 10 min of the same video. I just want suggestions on this, why the crf 20 slow got more mb than the medium?

Because medium preset has smaller time allowance to improve compression further. Meaning not to encode it better but to look harder to get desired quality.

And what of the three woul be the more appropriated? If you were to do the encoding?

That is highly subjective, only you, by viewing it on your device, can decide what quantizer is appropriate for your video. And then how much time you can afford to encode video with slower settings (it takes a bit longer but you save some hardisk space, compare your 138MB vs 127MB using CRF 20).

my usual choice is CQ18 - very slow. it encodes at the quality i can live with.

I also use CQ18, and constant framerate with H.264/AC3 as the result. Size ~1.5GB-2.00GB.
Looks good to me.

I use cq 16 for dvd due to the fact that it helps to prevent moiring in black scenes.
