Hi all, I have a Win8.1x64 PC and a Win10x64 laptop, with latest VLC player installed. I downloaded an MP4 8K video from youtube and I'm unable to play it smoothly. Is this a software restriction? Or is it hardware related (videocard capability)? In the first case, what would be a suitable player? Thanks

Could be hardware related. 8K decoding needs a lot of CPU or a suitable GPU for decoding and scaling/rendering. Without MediaInfo of the file and your exact CPU and GPU specs it is not possible for us to assess whether your system is too slow or it could be fixed with different software settings.

Thanks everyone, I made some research, I don't think it is hardware related since my laptop (Dell XPS 15 9560) has de Nvidia GeForce 1050 card+32Gb RAM+i7 7700. I set the Nvidia Control Panel to have Firefoxx64 browser use the discrete card over integrated graphics and the 8k video plays smoothly in the browser. Problem is that I'm unable to get MPC-HC, VLC (and some other video players) to use the dedicated NVIDIA card over the integrated graphics (I'm only given the choice of the integrated graphics). Any suggestion as to how to fix this? Thanks

Try renaming the executables. e.g. "mpc-hc64.exe" to "mpc-hc64_b.exe". Then set them to the Nvidia/max performance profile.

@carsinge, It's easy to create your own thread. Just Lclick on the forum you want, then you will see the dialog to create your thread.
In this thread, scroll up to the header, 'Forum>Video>Newbie /General discussions>Unable to play 8K video smoothly' and Lclick on 'Newbie /General discussions' and you will see '+Post New Thread' at the upper left.Last edited by redwudz; 4th Jun 2017 at 19:51.

Hi Alegator,
I was just wondering what 8K monitor you are using for your desktop ?
Thinking of upgrading myself.
Many thanks.wake up this planet is dying! -
Hi Hamilton, for my desktop I only have a 1080p monitor
, but my notebook has a 4K display
. I was just curious to see if my hardware was up to the task of playing 8K video, my desktop has 6th Gen Intel i7 with no dedicated graphics card, and no matter what software/setting I use it's not able to play it smoothly. My notebook however is able to play it smoothly thanks to the Nvidia 1050 which barely fits the bill. I am in no hurry to go for a 8K monitor, I think currently the sweet spot is 4K, I like either LG or DELL monitors. Regards.
