Hello everyone, I recently downloaded Panic Room and got both avi and mpeg forms. Both forms had some "hissing" sound. I did a search on "hiss" and read that I needed the program Cool Edit to fix this. I downloaded Cool Edit 2000 and now all I'm wondering what to do is how to use the program. Anybody know how to use the program step by step to fix the hissing on the movie or can at least direct me to a place that explains this.
Thnx in advance 8)

once in cool edit open the wav file, along the menus across the top you will find TRANSFORM click on this and on the drop down menu select NOISE REDUCTION and then hiss reduction, you will have to experiment to get the best result. try and cut a small part of the file for practising on as it can take a long time to process which will drive you nuts after hours of messing around to find its not quite right
Dont feed the little Varmits too much -
Don't mess about with hiss reduction,it'll take forever to find the right combination and then it wont sound too good.Go straight to Transform ->Filters->Scientific Filters and use Bessel set on low pass with delay and extended range checked.Worked a treat for me on Panic Room and The Time Machine. :D

Does your avi copy of Panic Room have a ringing sound in it? I cleaned up the hiss in my copy in Cool Edit using the hiss rediction filter and it worked nicely but now there is an annoying ring in the track. I went more in depth about it here: http://forum.vcdhelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=87430
I'd like to know what the problem is so I can wacth the movie. The hiss was too distracting and the ring is even worse. -
A ring is a bit easier to remove than a hiss...
With a "ring", usually it's at the same pitch and tone, so you can go into "Graphic Equalizer" and narrow down which frequency it's in and take it out completely (in 30-sample mode, not the "simple" one)
With a hiss, you do have to use that "Noise Reduction" or "Hiss Reduction", and it is almost a crap shoot. You'll need to be careful not to do it to much, or it'll distort the audio (like what just happened to give you the ring). Hope you have the original audio somewhere..
Or... wait for the DVD. -
With CoolEdit Pro it's quite easy to reduce background noise:
Go to a part with silence, select it and then use noise reduction. Then get profrile from selection and preview it.Set the reduction slider to the middle position. If you're satified press ok.
Next select a bigger portion with much voice and music and apply noise reduction again. Now press preview and adkust slider until no "ringing" or flanging sound is heart.Press cancel, selct whole wave and do noise reduction again.
If you want to get rid of a specifi freq. band use parmetric eq.
