I've been reading up on VirtualDub, VirtualDubMod and VirtualDubAIO (All In One).

I've been using VirtualDub with an AviSynth script. I have a shortcut on my desktop which points to the VirtualDub.exe file that is in a folder. This folder is actually in my "Program Files" folder - I put it there as that seemed the best place for it.

As far as I can tell, the zip file containing VirtualDub.exe and all the other files doesn't install anything when it is opened - the files are simply extracted.

So when I looked at VirtualDubAIO.exe, I saw that an installer started up. I didn't let it run because I was curious as to why the description says that the .exe will "automatically install VirtualDub, input plugins, video filters and VFW/ACM codecs".

Does it really mean "install" in the "Windows" sense - i.e. add items to the registry, create a start menu shortcut, etc - or does it simply copy stuff to a folder.

    Any help gratefully received.

  2. It will add things to the registry. I don't know about shortcuts. It's not "portable" in the sense that it doesn't leave any traces on the system it's used on. But even the vanilla VirtualDub uses the registry.

P.S.: Currently, shekh's VirtualDub FilterMod is all the rage. It has some encoders (e.g. x264 but not XviD) embed in a more portable fashion.

    Thanks for the info.

Regarding shortcuts, I have a shortcut on my Windows desktop that has VirtualDub.exe as its target. I drag the AviSynth ".avs" file onto it and VirtualDub opens up and performs the tasks in the AviSynth file.

I don't know any other way to run VirtualDub, so any help again would be gratefully received.

I also discovered that the file saved by VirtualDub is at a bit rate of 157 Mbps! This is huge! And the file size itself is huge - 3 1/2 Gigabytes. The original source files total about 50 Megabytes.

So I was wondering what other people do to get the bit rate down.

  4. That question was already answered in your other thread. Basically, you need to choose an encoder each for video and audio compression. E.g. x264 and LAME MP3.

My apologies, sneaker. I completely missed your answer no. 4 in your reply in my other thread. And thanks for the link to the other thread about compressing - much appreciated.
