transferring is easy if the camera and it's firewire port are working and you have a firewire port on the computer. not many do these days, check that first. and get a decent firewire cable. the software is free, download winDV it's all you need. the tapes will be capture in their native DV format @ 13 GB/hour. you will need a large hard drive to store a bunch of tapes. converting to DVD format can be done fairly easily with a program like avstodvd.

  3. Firewire/1394 is not a "capture," but instead is simply a copy of the digital bits on the tape. Therefore you get a perfect copy of the original. It is a trivial exercise to do the transfer.

IMHO, the best software ever created for this job is Scenalyzer. The DV version was called SCLive. Note I said "was" because Andi, the developer, quit selling it a few years ago when demand dropped. However, he did a great thing and put it in the public domain and you can now download this for free:

As far as Firewire/1394 hardware goes, you can get a PCI 1394 board for any desktop PC running windows for about $10. If you have a laptop and it has slot for a PCMCIA/PC Card (older laptop) or ExpressCard (newer laptops), you can just buy one of those, pop it in and you're good to go.
