Hi All
Acer Laptop 5630Z connected to HDTV
Playing movies recorded from free to air TV using potplayer on laptop.
No audio out from HDTV so use audio output from Laptop (headphones output) to plug into aux input on my receiver amp (6:1)
Audio is pretty good (pro logic 2 I think)
Does anyone think I may be able to get any extra benefit from using an external sound card (startech or similar) so I can then use the optical audio input on receiver amp ?
Any advice Appreciated

Nope... No addditional benefit
Just ue what you have right now
Too Bad ....your laptop doesn't have hdmi out, that would have been the easiest way.. -

Audio circuitry built into computers/laptops is typically marginal because of all the noisy computer hardware therein. You might get better sound, especially less noise, with a good external USB sound device.

You're only going to get stereo from the headphone output; Dolby Pro Logic II would be the receiver synthesizing extra channels. If you are recording surround audio off-air, then a USB interface could send the digital signal to your receiver for true 5.1 decoding.

But then I am not tech enough to know
Is AC3 or AAC surround ?
How would I know if they are broadcasting surround ?
Thanks for your help -
AC3 or AAC are formats just like mp3 or wav
Surround is determined by the number of channels in your sound -

Correct. AC3 6 channel would indicate they are likely broadcasting DD5.1 (Dolby Digital 5.1).
