MTS with subs to FORMAT ? to play on DVD with subs

Hello Experts
I have .mts video files recorded from TV onto HDD
For one movie this can be from 10 to 25 small files of .mts.
Subtitles are also recorded in these files.
I want to play these movies directly from the HDD onto my hdtv using DVD player.
They will play as .mts but no subtitles can be viewed (they do play in VLC and Potplayer with subtitles displayed)
Using Any Video Converter or ConvertXto video what would be the best lossless settings and format to use to convert files to play on DVD with the subtitles still present. ??
Also with all my attempts so far the resulting video does not fill my TV screen (black bars all around) as it does when played in the original mts files.
I can get almost the desired result using handbrake but it is slow working with these multiple files and the subtitles have to be hard coded (burned in)

Any suggestions or help from you guys will be greatly appreciated

First thing is to post a MediaInfo file report (Text mode so just copy and paste in post) Which brand PVR or DVR did you use to record the movie and was the particular movie a 16:9 or 4:3 movie?

Australian TV sends out EVERYTHING in a 16:9 canvas so any 4:3 material you will have black bars either side. However what you describe is a postage stamp image ie black bars all around and this is quite unusual for Australian TV so this sounds like the box used to record it. It certainly isn't a Beyonwiz or Topfield or Humax, the most common PVR's in use as they record stock standard mpg_TS for standard definition stations and MP4 for High definition.

The movie is 12 years a slave recorded from free view TV (SBS)
Recorded onto an external HDD (Fat32) from the USB port on a TEAC HDB850 Set Top Box
This is a cheap set top box but does record all subtitles (closed captions) from all channels.
It does also replay them well but navigation is very problematic hence I would like to be able to replay with DVD player (Sony BDP-S370) from the HDD.
I am sure the movie is 16:9 anyway that is what it replays at from the set top box on the HDTV.
The .mts file does actually play through the DVD player (16:9) but subtitles do not show.
I can convert through handbrake (M2TS) and hard code the subs and then it plays on DVD player at 16:9 (fills the screen) with subs displayed.
Very long and slow process as I first have to extract the subs (ccextractor) and then Queue Up all the small files and wait hours for it to process.
Subs are then permanent and cannot be hidden.
So looking at anyvideo converter and convertxtovideo I figure I should be able to crop if necessary , merge all the files to one and retain the subtitles to be replayed on the DVD player.
But with hours of mucking around I cannot get the resulting videos to fill the screen of the TV
and would also like to know the best format to convert to for the purpose.

If you set the menu item in mediainfo to TEXT you can then select using control C (copy) and then paste the text into your post using control V (paste) No need to upload the MediaInfo file as an image or a file as it is simple text as long as you set the preferences in MediaInfo to TEXT (Menu item View) The report should look something like this as an example.

I checked on IMDB and the aspect ratio should be 2.35:1 so there ought to be black bars top and bottom.... Normally SBS doesn't use the 16:9 release that cuts off bits of picture either side to fit in the 16:9 frame of TV (standard def or HDTV)

A fairly quick way to extract the subs from this file is to first put it in a MKV container using MKVMergeGui ( no re-encoding will happen) then use gMKVExtractGUI to extract the subs which are srt according to the MediaInfo report. Then you can process or handle the video and audio however you wish and simply include the extracted SRT file give it the same name as the video and hopefully it should work. Personally I would recommend a Beyonwiz PVR say model T2 (has 2 internal + 1 external tuners or the T4 has 4 tuners and can record up to 12 programs simultaneously) either with an internal hdd or a barebones model and record directly to a nominated external hdd, the recordings are then one simple TS file that can be used as is in VLC or used to author a DVD etc.

Not them multiple files like I get now
And I could record onto and play back from an external HDD (I presume NTFS to fit one ts File)
Do they record all the many different subtitles (closed captions) from all of the freeview channels ?
I have often looked at the Topfield 2400 do you know if that one records just one ts file ?

There are many configurations from a small to very large internal hdd for recording or record to a network drive or attached USB drive. Raed the link as it gives a comparison of the various models. If you want to do some research they are based on the European Enigma 2 PVR which is a public domain unit. If you use an internal drive it is formatted Linux EXT4 for external NTFS. The recording format is stock standard TS or MP4 for HDTV channels. I've attached a screenshot of what the files look like. The recording is just one file depending on length around 2~4GB. It records subtitles and in Australia we only have one sub transmitted and it's always in English. SBS as they show so many foreign movies burn in their subs say the Swedish crime series. I've had a Beyonwiz since they were introduced with the original P1 model. ProjectX can demux SDTV channels and TS Doctor is the modern equivalent if you need to demux etc.

This is what you see on the recording folder hdd - I have TS format configured to use VLC so that's why the VLC icon. There are also a gaggle of helper files that contain movie info and navigation stuff, not shown for clarity to show the video is recorded as one single file. Transfer to your computer is either by Ethernet or WiFi. If you can justify the expenditure the T4 is an excellent model as it also has a HDMI capture input so you can record off cable or Chromecast etc. If it's recording late at night and you want to go to bed just press the off button on the remote and it continues to record till the end of the timer. I'm fairly active on the Forum, where you will find many helpful members, quite a few engineers and people who work i the media to everyone else! Service availability is quick if necessary.

One other point the Beyonwiz is a much newer technology than Topfield and there are regular firmware updates and an error reporting system if required. I believe Topfield in Australia are a somewhat difficult company to deal with and they closed down their Forum some time ago. Any critical comments would be deleted and the forum was heavily moderated. By comparison the BW forum is very open and transparent with a free wheeling "Off Topic" section ie it is democratic.

Fast fast forward works well and you can program the cursor keys in settings to jump over commercials. The Up button default is 3 minutes forward etc... Navigation is OK and plays most file formats including MKV with embedded commercials. DVD navigation is fairly basic but improving with firmware updates. It receives and records 3D TV on those odd occasions they do it. There were a few Youtube videos of the BW demo. Possible the first release T3 . There are a range of plugins including a Gmail reader if you want - all free.

Just an update for anyone who may follow this thread now or in the future
I will when I can purchase a Beyonwiz PVR
In the meantime I have found the "Old Faithfull" HandBrake has been the best option for me to get my (recorded from TV) movies ready to play on the DVD player with all subtitles showing.
Subtitles extracted using ccextractor
Can be Hard burned in or Soft (DVD player can turn on or off)
Plays on the TV exactly as originally broadcast (fills the screen same as original)
Takes hours to process but result is excellent .
Other way is play recorded files on my old laptop connected to TV using potplayer (brilliant media player)
I think the audio is better on the DVD player but result through laptop is also very good.
