so I'm stuck using handbreak to re encode them going on 14 hours strait now for 7 videos .. I seriously need to fix this error because I have a lot more mkv to mp4 to do ..
I use pretty much default settings , superfast level 4.1 /mp4 /I do have enable mp4 optimization when loading the file checked m now sure if that was default.

  2. MP4 "Web Optimization" is not always necessary but shouldn't really slow down either. It is for web streaming so the index is at the front of the file. Then a browser can start playing the file before it has comletely downloaded.

    About the ffms/lavf/avs/raw error:
The x264.exe included is probably old and doesn't know HEVC yet. You can replace it with a new one from e.g. komisar but it will not make things faster than HandBrake at identical settings. If your player does not support HEVC you do have to re-encode and that costs time. No way around it.

You can speed things up if:
    - You have a GPU that has H.264/AVC hardware encoding (but those are less efficient than x264)
    - You choose an even faster preset
    - You downscale resolution to e.g. 720p
    - Combination of the above

Best is not to create HEVC files in the first place if your player can't play them. (But you can buy HEVC players very cheap nowadays...)

  3. thanks , yeah it was for plex , and well apple TV / rokus 4 / nvidia shield / xbox 1 all supprt's it , I figured since it was nice quality and so small i'd go with it , but I don't want it to direct stream so I figured I would change them to mp4 .. ic now that it's a lot of work

  4. The Shield should be able to play HEVC directly from mkv, be it streaming or from USB. Just a matter of the right software.

  5. I know , my main problem is using plex with plex cloud .. they allow 3 streams ether transcodes or direct streams , unlimited direct play, so I want to make sure I change everything to mp4 compatible to what most users uses , apple 4 / shield / Roku 4 / web .. so that it can run direct play without transcoding and limitation of 3 people at once
