  1. I'm trying to capture a tape which I believe is in the PAL format.

    I have 2 VCRs.
Panasonic NV-HS620AM - claims to playback NTSC/PAL/MESECAM as well as SECAM-D/K
Panasonic NV-HS860 - says it plays MESECAM

When I play the tape back in the 620, I get a black and white image. When I play the tape back in the NV-HS860, I get a black and white image however there is a weird rainbow color pattern in the picture. See attachment.

Could this be a case of MESECAM being recorded on the tape and its color subcarrier is corrupted? I tried capturing this with a Canopus ADVC-110 as well as with a SkyHD CaptureX card which seems to accept any input format. I tried choosing all the different PAL and SECAM formats yet nothing seemed to work.

It's also an OLD tape. Every car I recognize in that video is a mint condition 70's American car.

  3. Yeah, it's most likely from the 80s I believe. Any ideas? Is it most likely a weak colorburst on the tape, so I'm stuck with black and white?

Without knowing exactly what format the tape is it's all guesswork.
If you have a PAL television, even if the tape is NTSC....it should still show up(on the TV) in color.
Most capturing software/hardware will show B&W.
