I used DVD Shrink to get the dvd onto the hard drive......if it's burned to disc it won't display the subs upon playback on a dvd player ( though on a computer/blu ray player it will) . So I have to do it something like this> have a separate file in the movie folder containing the subs, ( which were extracted from the ISO file) .....this is the correct way?

What kind of subs are they? VobSub or Closed Captions (line 21/608)...

How are you playing it on your dvd player and which model do you have?

Is the rip on the hard drive in ISO format?

Also, How are you burning it onto the DVD?
Are you retaining the VIDEO_TS structure or converting it to another format, such as h264?

If you're retaining the original VIDEO_TS structure when burning it onto another disc, extracting the subtitles probably isn't going to do you any good. TBH, it sounds like a problem with how DVD Shrink is saving the files when you're ripping the DVD.

If you don't need to compress it for the sake of disk space, try ripping it with DVD Decrypter or DVDFab instead of using DVD Shrink.

To answer the question from your subject line, there are several free tools to extract/OCR subtitles from DVD rips.
These are just a few that I use:
    Subtitle Edit
    DVDSubEdit
    VSRip

    No.

Like awgie, I suspect your process, and probably your burning to disc. I don't use DVDShrink and don't know whether or not it might be responsible but, like him, I would use a different decrypter. What burning program do you use? Does the completed and burned DVD have both a VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS file?
