I have a question and think it may answer itself.
I just bought a DVCamcorder and thought "wow now I can convert all my old anolog tapes and play them on my dvd player" and "I can take new footage and edit the DV media and burn it to DVD quality".
I have now found out that my DVD player will not play miniDVD (CD/R). So I was wondering... how much quality would I loose if I took the raw *.avi file and ceated a SVCD instead of a DVD MPEG2??
What would you guys recomend doing???

I suggest you to goes to SVCD without any problem. Qulaity is great, no like a DVD but....similar.
    1) As ripping format is cheap and easy, better than VHS
    2) As a format for camera movie is the best way, better than VHS.
Follow the guide you'll find on the forum.
Do not waist your time trying too many template and strange formats (XVCD, different size SVCD). Just let your PC to have good encoding with TMPGEnc. And you'll be ok.

Some of this depends on the quality of your old analog tapes. While people are right in saying the a higher bandwidth format will not improve your old videos, it will help to preserve what is there.

I have 20 year old home videos which are in pretty marginal shape. If I convert them to SVCD, they look OK. I recently borrowed a DVD burner and the results were much better. I now feel like I can archive this old stuff and not feel like bunch of quality is lost. Blank DVD-Rs are down to $3 - $5 depending how adventurous you want to be.
