Can you recommend a good (inexpensive) video editor program?
I'm looking at Wondershare Filmora trial version. It looks pretty good. $59 is more than I want to spend.
Any recommendations to compare it to?

Look at the list of video editors in the Software section at the top of this forum. Many, many from which to choose from basic to advance and free to $$$$.
