  1. I have a LAGS encoded AVI file and a PCM encoded 8 channel WAV file which both play flawlessly in WMP and VLC. However, once muxed using MKVmerge then only VLC will play the resultant MKV file (WMP returns a generic 'Cannot play file...' error message.)

Does anyone know if this is a known issue with a known fix?

Thanks for any and all suggestions, advice or solutions.

    Files were created as follows:
10,135,210KB AVI: Encoded to 24bit. RGB. Lagarith; in VirtualDub.
457,494KB WAV: Encoded to 24bit. 48000Hz. 8 Channel. PCM; in Adobe Audition.
10,592,982KB MKV: AVI plus WAV muxed with no tags; in MKVmerge.

    VLC decoding as follows...
AVI: Codec: Lagarith Lossless. Resolution: 1920x804. Frame rate: 23.986216.
WAV: Codec: PMC S24 LE (araw). Channels: 3F2M2R/LFE. Sample Rate: 48000Hz. Bits per sample: 32.
MKV: Video and audio streams exactly as above.

    Software versions:
    x64 Windows 10 1607 14393.693
    Lagarith 1.3.27 (x64 and x86 dll installed)
    x64 Windows Media Player 12.0.14393.82
    x64 VLC Media Player 2.2.1.0
    x64 MKVmerge 7.8.0.0
    x86 VirtualDub 1.10.4
    x64 Audition CC 2015 8.0.0.1

  2. What splitters and decoders do you have installed? Microsoft's mkv splitter might not support Lagarith. Try installing LAV Filters. If it's still not working try Codec Tweak Tool to change the used codec. (Try "LAV [...]" and/or "USE MERIT" settings.)

    Thanks sneaker,

I installed the LAV filters... no change. So used CodecTweakTool to switch the MKV filter between 'LAV splitter' and 'use merit' (and then tried that along with the AVI filter switched between 'Microsoft' and 'LAV'... no change.

I think you're on the right track though; surely WMP's refusal to play the MKV file is caused by an inability to demux its two streams? (Just for completeness I have also encoded the original uncompressed video using Lagarith's 64bit codec and muxed that and the WAV file into an MKV using MKVmerge... exactly same outcome in both WMP and VLC though; which is logically.)

I've restored my Windows system to where it was prior to installing the LAV filters and tweaks, so if you have any other suggestions please bear that in mind; since it only takes a few minutes to restore my system from back-up I'm willing to try anything.

Just for info: I've been tasked with the lossless archiving of uncompressed separate but related audio and video files and thought an MKV container was the way to go... until WMP choked on the result. So any suggestions regarding an alternative archival method would also be gratefully received.

    Thanks again.
